You just cannot resist the temptation of this inviting green and black surface that lies in front of you. How deep this area is or how quickly you would sink you do not know, but exactly this uncertainty makes your excitement grow beyond bounds. Standing there you feel your pulse quickening, not only feeling but also hearing every beat of your own heart. After taking two deep breaths, you step back a few paces, then dash forward and jump - aiming to land as far out in the bog as possible and to plunge right in. Your feet touch the green moss carpet which gives way for a few inches, before bouncing back and causing you to lose your balance and trip over. It has not given way as you would have expected. You fall onto the soft moss which wobbles all around you in response to your sudden arrival. Though this is not going according to your plan, you rather like this new experience. This is the first bog that has ever played "hard-to-sink" with you. As you rise to your feet, you are already looking for the next spot to try and break through. Of course you could simply step into one of the spots with exposed peat on top, but that option would remain for later if needed. For now you have decided to take on the bog's challenge and try to get down the hard way. So you walk out farther into the bog, noticing how the soft surface bounces up and down with every step. Every other step you put your foot down a little harder to see if it has any effect, but it barely makes any discernable difference. Then you try to run a few steps. The surface heaves and bounces a little more and longer after that, but that is all it does. Well, that and it almost makes you fall again. By now you are a little more than twenty feet from the edge, and you are still far from the center of this vast bog.
It feels interesting, exciting, and in a way very arousing, to be so far away from solid ground, but now you really want to get serious about sinking - that and maybe going even farther from the edge. So you pick a nice big black patch far out and started jogging towards it. The thought of maybe starting your descent before reaching that goal adds nicely to your excitement. And then it finally happens and your left foot penetrates the green moss layer.
